Dr. James Williams Christofferson

Dr. James William Christofferson, age 89, died on March 14, 2009. Dr. Christofferson moved to Maryville and set up his practice at Blount Memorial Hospital in 1956 and in 1961 became the hospital’s first Board Certified Anesthesiologist. He retired in 1989 after 43 years of practice. He is predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Pauline Christofferson. Dr. Christofferson graduated in General Practice from Marquette University in 1954 and in Anesthesiology from Duke University in 1956. During his tenure at Blount Memorial, Dr. Christofferson served as chief of anesthesiology and on several executive committees. He became President of the State Anesthesiology Society in 1975 and received a Distinguished Service Award at Blount Memorial in 2002. He was a long time golf enthusiast and rose grower. He was a devoted husband and proud of his children and grandchildren. Dr. Christofferson is survived by his brother, Robert Christofferson of Arizona, four daughters and two grandchildren. They are Mary Christofferson of Knoxville and husband Dr. Joe Wilkerson; daughter Carol Christofferson of Princeton, NJ; Chris Christofferson of New Orleans and husband Robert Jones; and Kathy Wollman of Valley Center, CA, husband Fred Wollman and their children, Jaime-Chris Wollman and Andrew Wollman. Dr. Christofferson was a dedicated physician and gentle man. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Father Brent Shelton officiating.
