Douglas McArthur Garner, age 80, of Maryville, TN passed away at home surrounded by family on February 7th, 2025. Douglas was born in Blount County on September 16th, 1944 in his parent’s home. He was born into a large family with six brothers and five sisters. He bravely fought Parkinson’s for twelve long years, however, it was time for him to be healed, so God called him home. Douglas served in the Army for two years where he was an E5 Private First Class. As soon as his time was over, he came home and immediately married his sweetheart Elizabeth Susan Garner. They were married for 57 years and were blessed with a loving family including two daughters, Tracey Hawkins (Steve Hawkins) and Crystal Johnson (Greg Johnson). He also has four grandchildren who he loved fiercely, Adrian Hawkins (Jessica Hawkins), Autumn Brewster (Logan Brewster), Abby Hawkins (fiancé River Jenkins) and Aubrie Johnson. Other surviving family members include his sister Agnes Romines (Jay Romines) and sister-in-law JoAnn Garner. He was looking forward to the births of his great grandchildren due in June of this year. He worked at Alcoa for 32 years, from 1968 to 2000. He had so many friends, some called him Doug, but many knew him as “Red Garner” due to his red curly hair. More recently, his favorite pastimes included talking about fast cars (Chevrolet), eating good food, telling stories, reading the Bible, and spending time with his family. When he was younger, he loved jogging, lifting weights, car racing (anyone willing), helping those in need, traveling with his best friend and wife Susan, and building motors with his grandson Adrian Hawkins and one of his best buddies Phillip Whitehead. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.
