Doris Georgene Standifer Caldwell

October 8, 1928 — October 1, 2016

Doris Georgene Standifer Caldwell, beloved Nanaw, mother and friend to all who met her, passed on from this earth on Saturday, October 1, 2016, in her home at Asbury Place in Maryville. Doris was born October 8, 1928, in Red Bank, Tennessee, where she began a life of service to the Lord her God that lasted until her final breath. Nanaw was notorious for "cooking for the old people" at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lenoir City, many of whom were ten years her junior. She taught her family, friends and community how to walk in the path of Jesus Christ, in kindness and mercy and courage. She worked for three decades as a counselor for the State Dept. of Vocational Rehabilitation and "retired" into a life of serving others as a faithful witness to God's love. She gave of her resources freely and generously to her church and veterans organizations. She was married to Don Caldwell, Navy serviceman and veteran of WWII, for 44 years. She was preceded in death by her parents James Ross Standifer and Harriet Elizabeth Grigsby Standifer; her husband Charles Don Caldwell, Sr.; her son Charles Don Caldwell, Jr.; her siblings James Standifer, Elba Tuggle, Robert Standifer, Norma Roberts and Elizabeth Standifer. Doris is survived by her son Dan Ross Caldwell and daughter-in-law Sissy; her grandchildren Kate Caldwell, Joe Caldwell, Jennifer Vaughn and her husband Henry Vaughn, and Nikki Caldwell; her great-grandchildren Gabriel, Jonathan and Abigail Vaughn; her niece Paulette Gann; her dear friend Martha Cobb; and her Asbury family. Doris survived a massive stroke at the age of 82 and thereafter continued to teach her family and friends how to live a life of courage and love. Nanaw is God's light in this world, and will be carried on by all who know her and love her. Nanaw's sparkling baby blue eyes, infectious smile, and big ole "snuggle hugs" will be greatly missed. Her life is a blessing to all who are privileged to call her family and friend. Nanaw's family will receive friends at McCammon-Ammons-Click at 220 West Broadway Avenue in Maryville on Wednesday, October 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church at 703 West Broadway Avenue in Maryville on Thursday, October 6, at 4:00 p.m.
