Donald E. Bates

Donald E. Bates (LTC., U.S. Army Ret.) Age 68 of Alcoa died Friday June 7, 2002 at his home. He served in Korea, Libya, Ethiopia, Germany, and two tours in Vietnam. He was a graduate of Alcoa High School, The University of Tennessee with a B.S., and M.S. in Education, plus further graduate study toward a PHD, the University of Missouri at Rolla with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and graduate study in Soils Engineering at the University of Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald E. Bates and Jennie Garland Bates, of Alcoa. Survivors include his wife, Vivian Hutton Bates, of Alcoa; daughter, Janet Ann Potts, of Howell Michigan; son, Darin E. Bates, of Alcoa; two grandchildren; brother, William G. Bates, of Alcoa;. The body was cremated, the family will welcome relatives and friends at their convenience Wednesday June 12th at the family home 1039 S. Linden Dr. Alcoa. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation or to the Friends of the Library or to Blount County Hospice. A private interment will be held in Michigan.
