David Leroy Engelhardt

September 27, 1921 — September 1, 2010

David LeRoy Engelhardt, retired Presbyterian Minister, passed away on September 1, 2010. Born 1921, he was raised in Philadelphia, PA. He was a graduate of Penn State and Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ. Rev. Engelhardt’s first calling was as Assistant Pastor of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City. He and his young family became residents of Maryville in 1947 where he taught New Testament at Maryville College. He subsequently established churches in Hutchinson, KS and Euless, TX. His international service included the Union Church of Lima, Peru and teaching at Collegio San Andrea, the University of San Marcos, and the American School in Lima. Upon returning to the United States, he served as Professor and Head Librarian of the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Brunswick, NJ. Rev. Engelhardt retired to his home in Maryville with his devoted wife Mildred. He continued preaching at many churches in the area where he made wonderful friends. He was a devoted and greatly-loved husband, father, and grandfather. He loved education, travel, gardening and meeting and sharing time with people. He attended both Highland Presbyterian Church and New Providence Presbyterian Church where he made lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed but most of all his life will be celebrated for his distinguished accomplishments, his love of the Church and his devotion to the Lord. He is survived by wife, Mildred; son, John Kerch Engelhardt and his wife Rita; son, David Engelhardt and his wife Kelly; daughter, Karen Rubin and her husband Neil; grandchildren, Marcus and Ian Engelhardt; and sister, Alberta Crawford. A private interment will be held at Grandview Cemetery. A memorial service for family and friends will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 6, 2010, at Highland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wendy Neff and Rev. James Wilbanks officiating. There will be an informal gathering in the Parlor at Highland Presbyterian Church following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church and New Providence Presbyterian Church.
