Command Sergeant Major Alfred Richard Moelter, Sr.

Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Alfred Richard Moelter, Sr., of Vinemont, AL passed away in Huntsville, AL on 07 September 2012, at the age of 79 after a gallant fight with illness. He was born on 3 February, 1933 in Pittsburgh, PA. CSM Moelter joined the US Army on 09 February 1953 as an Airborne Infantryman. He was promoted to Sergeant Major with 13 years of service in 1966. CSM Moelter was a 27 year veteran of the US Army. He was a graduate of the Basic Airborne Course and served with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division at Camp Mackall, North Carolina from 1953 to 1956. He served overseas in Korea (1955-56), France (1961-64), Vietnam (1968-69) and Germany (1974-77). His last assignment was as the Post Adjutant General Sergeant Major at Fort Benning, GA from 1977 thru 1979. After retirement in 1979, he earned his college degree from Columbus State University, served as a deputy sheriff with the Harris County, GA Sheriffs Office, and served as a Tactical Officer at Lyman Ward Military Academy in Camp Hill, AL. In 1986 he moved to Cullman, AL and served for 26 years as the Boys Dormitory Director at Saint Bernards Preparatory School. During this time he influenced and mentored hundreds of young men and took his duties and responsibilities very seriously. The fact that so many of these young men have succeeded in their adult lives was a great joy to him. He enjoyed keeping in touch with many of them after their graduation from SBP. His decorations include the Basic Airborne Badge, Legion Of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Korea Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Campaign Stars, National Defense Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal with 8th Award, 2 Overseas Service Bars and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Anthony. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy; sons Major (Ret.) Alfred Moelter, Jr. of Fayetteville, NC, and John Moelter of Milton, GA, daughter Ann Mayer of Sarasota, FL, 11 grandchildren: Daniel, David, Gennifer, Mellissa, Lucius, Tiffany, Mark, Grant, Eric, Alex and Amelia; and 5 great grandchildren: Macie Grace, Nolan, Luke, Xander, and Paisley. The family will receive friends 12:00-12:45 pm Monday, September 10, 2012, at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville, TN with a 1:00 p.m graveside service with full military honors to follow in Grandview Cemetery with Father John and Father Marcus of Cullman, Alabama officiating. www.mccammonammonsclick.com The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to charity.
