Charles H. Settles

SETTLES, Charles H., age 90 of Walland, died on August 28, 2002, at Blount Memorial Hospital. Born in Union County TN, he was the son of the late Charles H. and China J. Settles. He graduated from Maynardville High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a retired ALCOA machinist and a lifelong farmer and lover of the land. He was a member of the Settle/Suttle family, numbering some 40,000 in the U.S., all descended from Francis Settle, who immigrated to Virginia from England before 1656. Many generations prior to that, the family originated from the market town of Settle in the Yorkshire Dales. He is survived by his wife, Stella M. Settles of Walland; son, Gary S. Settles of Bellefonte, PA; brother, Will Settles of Sweetwater; two granddaughters, Marianne Settles and Lara Settles Denis. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at East Walland Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Nelson officiating. The interment will be in Edge Wood Cemetery in Knoxville.
