Charles Boyd Smelser, age 85, passed away Saturday morning, November 25, 2006 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a brief struggle with cancer. Boyd was a veteran of World War II and retired from ALCOA after 46 years of service. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Maryville where he served in many positions of leadership. He had been active in Civitan Club and was involved with Habitat for Humanity. Most recently he held leadership positions at Asbury Place of Maryville where he and his wife, Inis Loy Smelser, resided. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Leatha Smelser, and his first wife, Wilma Dunkelberg Smelser. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Sandra Watt, and husband, Don, of Jackson, TN; three step-children, Kenneth Wyrick and wife, Lee, of Hartford, CT; Jan Dempsey and husband, Jon, of Maynardville, TN; and Steve Wyrick of Maryville, TN. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. The family will have a private graveside service on Tuesday afternoon. They ask that friends join them at First United Methodist Church of Maryville for a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Asbury Place of Maryville or to First United Methodist Church of Maryville.
