Charles A. Smith

March 30, 1916 — February 19, 2012

In faithful submission to God’s plan, Charles A. Smith was called to Heaven on February 19, 2012. A gentle and kind man, his 95 years were defined by his strength of character, his love of family, and his faith in God. He resided in Maryville, TN, for 71years, moving there from his birthplace in Marbledale, TN in 1941. Charles Andrew Smith was the second of nine children born to Charles E. and Maude Marie Patty Smith, March 30, 1916, at Marbledale Community in Knox County, TN. He accepted Christ as his Savior at age 10 years in a revival at Asbury Methodist Church held in conjunction with Asbury Grammar School. Charles was baptized in the French Broad River into Marbledale Baptist Church by Rev. Andy Pellum. He moved to Blount County and was employed by Aluminum Company of America in October of 1941. He retired from Alcoa, October 2, 1978, after 38 years of service. He married Ollie Bernice Smith, the mother of his two children, in November of 1934. He married his second wife, Eleanor Grissiem Pounders Smith, April 15, 1994. He joined East Maryville Baptist Church in 1994 and was an active member until he was unable to attend due to his failing health. Charles A. Smith is survived by two children, Oliver Douglas Smith and wife Lou of Las Vegas, NV; and Phyllis Maudine and husband Clarence McGill of Maryville, TN; six grandchildren; twelve great grand children and four great great grandchildren. His grandchildren are Oliver Douglas Smith of Coatesville, PA; Phyllis Dains of Knoxville TN; Mark Lacy of Marshall, VA; Gary McGill of Dayton, OH; Sam McGill of Alpharetta, GA; and Phillip McGill of Maryville, TN. His great grandchildren are Maria Widner of Philadelphia, PA; Joshua Smith of Coatesville, PA; Brian Smith of Coatesville, PA; Andrew Smith of Knoxville, TN; Tiffany Dains of Knoxville, TN; Justin McGill of Dayton, OH; Devlin McGill of Dayton, OH; Michah Wall of Alpharetta, GA; Ruslan McGill of Alpharetta, GA; Samuel McGill of Alpharetta, GA; Jamie Williams of Nashville TN; and Rebecca Williams of Maryville TN. His great great grandchildren are Peyton, Chloe, Piper, and Domique. He is also survived by his sisters, Juanita Michler and Agnes Cardwell. Charles is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Vernon, Jasper, and Samuel, and sister Chloe Armstrong; his first wife, Ollie Bernice Smith, who passed away on November 13, 1992, and his second wife, Eleanor Grissiem Pounders Smith, who passed away in January of 2006. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 23, from 1 to 2 pm followed by the funeral at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, 220 West Broadway, Maryville TN. Following the funeral service, burial will be at Asbury Cemetery, 5100 Asbury Cemetery Road, Knoxville TN. The Reverend Keith Johnson and Hospice Chaplin Ron Russell will officiate at the funeral.
