Alvin Southwood, Jr., of Maryville, TN, formerly of Indianapolis, IN, passed away peacefully January 3, 2011, at Asbury Place. He was born in Lamar, IN on February 20, 1916. He attended his ancestoral church, Mt. Zion Christian Church as a child. Due to the depression, he had to begin working at 13 years old in 1929. Counting his service in the Coast Guard he worked continuously until he retired at 65. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II which included 15 months in Greenland. In 1943 he met and married Helen Fiske of Upton, MA. They moved to Indianapolis in 1945. Al and Helen had three children and lived in the same house for 57 years. They relocated to Maryville in January 2008. Al and Helen were married for 67 years, have eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. They are members at Monte Vista Baptist Church. He will be buried at Mt. Zion Christian Church near his birthplace in Southern IN at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 7. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home with funeral services to follow at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Mantooth officiating. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to either University Heights Christian Church, 4050 Shelby Street, Indianapolis, IN 46227, or Mt. Zion Christian Church, P. O. Box 175, Santa Claus, IN 47579.
