LONG, Alma Rose (Stout), age 90 years old, currently a resident of Morning View Village in Maryville, passed peacefully Tuesday morning away after a brief struggle with cancer. Mrs. Long was born in Englewood, Tennessee, and attended Tennessee Wesleyan College, later graduating from Carson-Newman College with a BS in Education. During her teaching career she received her Library Certification from the University of Tennessee. She was the youngest of four, with two sisters and a brother. At the beginning of her teaching career in Greenback, she met and married Ronald Elmer (Bush) Long. She taught English and was Librarian for many years at Porter High School, with a total teaching career of 32 years. For much of her life, she had been active in Chilhowee Club, Alcoa Garden Club, New Providence Women’s Church Circles, Delta Kappa Gamma, ESO, AARP, and Retired Teachers. Alma was an avid reader and always kept a book at her side. She enjoyed UT sports and was a big fan of the Lady Vols. Alma always had a positive outlook and in a quiet manner was a strong role model for her family. While living in Alcoa she hosted numerous family gatherings and made everyone feel at home. In her retirement she enjoyed gardening, club gatherings, spoiling her grandchildren, sewing, and being independent.
