Alden Fenton Smith (103) passed away peacefully on January 28, 2015. Born March 21, 1911 to Phillip and Leora Fenton Smith in Duluth Minnesota. He is a direct descendant of John Alden who came to America on the Mayflower in 1620 and became Treasurer of Plymouth Colony. Graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Aerospace engineering and had a long and distinguished career with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft working on the design and testing of aircraft engines. He served as chief design engineer of the East Hartford division and later as Head of Engineering Operations at the Florida Research and Development center where he supervised the development and testing of the jet engine powering the SR-71 Blackbird. Preceded in death by first wife, Mildred Shelley Smith and second wife Lois Kramer Smith. Survived by children, Douglas Alden Smith, Jacquelyn Smith Johnson (Stan), Peter Kramer, Betsy Kramer and Fred Kramer. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. After retirement and moving to Maryville, Alden was involved in establishing the Blount County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and was the designer of the first 3 Habitat houses built in Blount County. He was a resident of Shannondale Maryville and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Alden F. Smith Scholarship fund in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Tennessee or to the Blount County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Memorial service will be at Fairview UMC, 2508 Old Niles Ferry Rd. at 3 PM on Saturday, January 31 with receiving of friends to follow.
