Albert Marvin Trew

Albert Marvin Trew, 81, passed away peacefully December 22, 2018, while with family and friends, succumbing after a +20 year battle against Parkinsons disease. Marvin was born on January 31, 1937 in Etowah, TN to the late Albert and Willie Trew. He graduated from Etowah High School in 1955 and from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1959, and along the way married Joanna Sitzler on June 30, 1957. They were blessed with two daughters, Marice and Jan. Marvin and Jodie followed career paths that took them to Hixson, TN where they taught in the Hamilton County public school system and attended Burks United Methodist Church for many decades. Marvin was a fixture at Hixson Junior High School where he primarily taught mathematics and at Burks UMC where he played the organ. Marvin was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Curtis Trew. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine Joanna Trew; two children: Marice Trew Montgomery, Jan Trew Abbott; and four grandchildren: John Wesley Montgomery IV, James Trew Montgomery, Catherine Anne (Montgomery) Keilson, and Joanna Marice Abbott. Throughout the years, Marvins life was shaped by his faith and love for God and people, and by his multiple interests and talents. He greatly impacted multitudes of students over several decades as evidenced by numerous testimonies of changed lives due to Marvins unique influence as an 8th grade math teacher. He was an excellent musician, pianist, and organist who began playing the piano at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church at age 9 and served Burks UMC for 45 years as organist. Marvin played the organ at several restaurants in the Chattanooga area as well, namely the Town & Country Restaurant, and his talents were also formally recognized when he was invited to play his own personal organ concert at the renowned Tennessee Theater in Knoxville. Marvins passion for Vol football was renowned, and it was not uncommon for him to play a sanctified version of Rocky Top during the Sunday morning church service following a big win. Marvin especially loved his grandchildren, and Papaw ensured that they were showered with attention and ice cream and other grandfatherly goodies.
